Even the kids said, this feels weird The front number plate is on the site as part of the memorial that number plate is the only part of the first six vehicles in the train that has survived. It was souvinired when the engine was dragged off the river bank, by the Hutt workshops salvage crew. all the rest of the first 6 vehicles was either left in the river, or cut up for scrap. the last few vehicles on the train survived.

it was a quiet , subdued christmas day...1953...just the radio reading out lists of names...a son of one of our same street neighbours was on it...returning home on christmas eve , for christmas at home...and the newly crowned Queen was visiting NZ at the time...

:(My father was station clerk at National Park at the time. He took me to see the site 3 days afterwards. there was mud everywhere and bits of wagons sticking out of it. There was clothing hanging in trees and suitcases, pillows and blankets in the mud too. One of the steam engines was on the bank by the line it had come off. They had made a new road and bailey bridge as the road had been washed out. They said the debris had been washed down the Whangahu river and out to sea. The beach was littered with pillows and clothing. Thank you Dad for taking me to see that scene. l wish l had a camera that day, lt will be something l will never forget!

An eerie feel. Every Christmas eve, the Northerner used to stop there to throw a wreath in the river... dont know if it still happens on the overlander, now that the Northerner isnt running
