Gosh, I feel like I'm missing a whole chapter here! Obviously there's more to this than Patty's post about cousins...
We were taught that offspring of close relations (such as cousins) basically have double the strengths, and double the weaknesses. Which means that if there's a small genetic fault such as a blood defect, the chances of that leading to a symptomatic condition are doubled. If there's poor vision, the chances of bad eyesight are doubled etc.

I have researched my Dad's side of my family tree, and a number of generations back two cousins married, and emigrated to New Zealand to join my Dad's ancestors. It was one of those 'dirty secret in the closet' things. And no, this does not explain my looniness ~ the cousins are on another branch of the family tree.

My aunty married her cousin - it was a 'shotgun' wedding, she had to!
