This could very well be the problem. Go to control panel>add/remove programs>tick box which says show updates and uninstall that update. Reboot afterwards. Also run your scans if you haven't already. Never hurts to dust the inside of comp, just be VERY CAREFUL on 2 points, make sure you ground yourself first by lightly slapping comp box a couple of times before you even take screws out and make sure you dont blow dust where it shouldn't go. (I always use a compressor with air gun that is held at least a foot away). Make sure everything is unplugged before you start the cleaning.

Have you got a tool bar at all mama? If you have, right click on a clear part of it and go to tollbars, left click on toolbars and then quick launch, otherwise you will also find that in control panel somewhere to fix that.

If you did a system restore properly all your bits should be in the right places You may have to remember a few passwords and put the lost items back into your favourites. Right click on your screen in an empty space and either refresh or sort by what you want them sorted by, that will get your icons back in their rightful places. By reboot I meant restart, but if you want to boot your comp, be a bit gentle please, it is only a baby and you may have Ms Bradford on your case If all of the above hasn't worked, do a system restore to an earlier date, a day or so before the IE8 update came in. That will fix it for you.
