Ab663 at Eskdale "Gabriel" runs down the main street of Kawakawa The train that runs from Waihi to Waikino (I have fired this steam engine! The old hands say that because you are using steam as you make it, its harder to fire than a bigger engine!)

One lady got off the train & said... I have never felt so dirty in all my life! She was in a real huff about it I dont think she enjoyed one minute of the day
On the other hand, ladies in their 70's 80's dressed with their hats etc couldnt stop smiling. It obviously brought back great memories for them

My uncle from TePuke worked on trains all his life Great stories he told
One Saturday morning he walked out to get the paper, came back inside, made him & his wife a cup of tea. Back in their separate beds with their drinks & papers...........
His heart just stopped, he kept reading the same page

Some of my uncles, and a number of other students, used to travel from fairlie to timaru on the fairlie flyer. One story goes something like this:- On the way home from timaru , at a place called Winscombe cutting, somehow the train "lost " the three empty goods wagons , which were seen going back through cave, about 15 miles back down the hill, were finally stopped at pleasant point. The culprits were barred from the train ,and had to go to boarding school.

The Goldfields Railway Waihi Station Waihi station complex also features stock yards, goods shed and 6 railway houses! (A typical provincial railway yard from the steam era) the line runs west from Waihi towards the Karangahake Gorge on the old East Coast Main Trunk (closed in 1978, when the Kaimai tunnel opened) The first bridge croses the Waitete stream on the ouitskirts of town the line then follows the Ohinemuri river, climbing, then descending "Snake Hill", then crosses the State Highway 2 at the entrance to the gorge. Then it follows SH2 to Waikino, crossing the Waitekauri River, before arriving Waikino

We stopped at the Tangiwai disaster site on our holiday What an eerie feeling that was, especially since there had been the flow late last year I took photos, the lahar had wiped out some of the barrier stopping people from going too close, the ground was still solid with it Kind of made you think about what it was like when it happened

Her dad, station officer at Turakina, took her to see it! Roll of honour freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sooty/tangiwai.htmlThe engine crew, Charles Parker, (driver) and Lance Redmond (fireman) had done everything to save the train. An autopy of the locomotive found that the oil feed, water injectors and blower valves were all shut off (fireman's side), while the reverser was full-forward (like putting a gearstick out of top gear into first), the regulator shut off and the train and engine brakes were hard on (all drivers side). The locomotive went head-first into the oposite back, bending the main frame, stripping the cab, and the crew, and losing the tender. Tangiwai engine Ka949's Taumarunui stablemate (in 1953) Ka942, is turned on the Taneatua turntable, october, 1997.
