Fisherman's camera catch - a majestic humpback whale By KATHY WEBB - The Dominion Post | Thursday, 05 June 2008 Email a Friend | Printable View | Have Your Say SPLASHING OUT: This humpback whale is the first seen off the Napier coast since records began in 1970. Glenn Beamsley went out to catch some fish, but found himself with bigger fish to fry after spotting a 15-metre humpback whale frolicking off Napier. The 49-year-old Napier dental process worker took his brother Shane and nephew Adrian out to an area known as the Northern Buoy, about 5 kilometres off the coast on Sunday afternoon. Neither luck nor fish were going their way, so about 3pm they stowed their meagre catch of gurnard and Mr Beamsley began pulling up the anchor. It was then that the keen fisherman saw a big splash near Bay View. "I thought it was a boat. Then I saw this thing leaping in the air, so we shot over for a closer look," Mr Beamsley said. Near the Yellow Buoy, about 2km off Bay View, they found an adult humpback whale enjoying a spot of R&R. His brother took the wheel while Mr Beamsley took photos as fast as he could while the whale repeatedly leapt in the air, dived and resurfaced around them. His nephew, who had never been in a boat before, let alone up close to a whale, was scared it would resurface under the boat. "If it had wanted to, it could have smashed us out of the water," Mr Beamsley said. After about 20 minutes, several other boats arrived and the whale began moving around. Children on a large yacht watched the giant leap out of the water and roll on its side, slapping its flippers on the surface and splashing water all over them. "The kids were really excited," Mr Beamsley said. Conservation Department marine conservation officer Steve Smith, of Wellington, said there had not been any reports of humpback whales in Hawke Bay waters since records began in 1970.

Moth and I had a similar experience, only with Orcas in the Hauraki Gulf. When you are in a 12' tinny and these massive things are all around you it is both scary and wonderful. We stopped the outboard and just sat there in wonder, cursing ourselves for not having the camera with us...... There were at least 15 of them, Mothers with calves as well as the huge bulls.

I think the best part of the orcas was when we had reached shore and retrieved the boat we headed for the toilets a few k's down the road. The Orcas were off the beach down there, very close to shore was a baby, Mum about 30 meters further out telling her babe off, it was quite naughty and just frollicking in the small surf waves as they broke just out from shore. Mum yelling at the babe, and the babe answering back.

Cant win can I Now I cant put the news in the right place either FFS - will you make up your mind!! If I had put this here, you would've told me to put it with the news we try to work in all the time hun...post anything you like in general...and we move it to a category so it is not lost...this thread has worked well , because it is in news and shifted to general...so we can always find the thread...because the {(title)]...shifted}...is always available...in the news category...we have a system...just it takes some understanding i s'pose... ...when we shift a thread from general to a category , it is reconition that we want the thread available to others for as long as possible...in general...most threads are on page 3/4/5 within a week...very hard to find in 2 weeks time
