Recently, the lads at the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society's Waikato branch got the hard word to vacate their slice of paradise in Te Awamutu. The problem of vacating wouldnt have been too bad... there were 4 wagons, each about 10 tons, that could ... and did, go on ordinary trucks. There was, however, a slight problem of moving an A class pacific, weighing in at 80 tons, a Ja class weighing in at 111 tons and an 84 ton Wab class tank engine, plus several dozen tons of parts!! A mad, last minute rush occured, then, suddenly a trucking company was found to move it all. Here, A423, sister to the Pacific at Weka Pass, and cousin to the Kingston Flyer engines is moved from truck to rail at the Pukeoware depot, on the Glenbrook Railway Here, Ja1267 is about to be unloaded at the old Otahuhu workshops, before being towed by fellow ex-Te Awamutu engine Ja1275 to Mainline Steam's Parnell depot. The biggie, tho was the tank engine. Unlike the Ja and the A, the Wab couldnt be separated from its tender... 84 tons on one truck!! Ouch!! Here Wab800 is being lowered onto the tracks at Glenbrook.

I forgot the other two Te Awamutu icons... Fa250 went to Waihi in the mid 90's then to Waitara Here she is on the transporter about to leave Waihi RM32 "Pangatoru" is one of 4 "Standard" Railcars preserved. It was moved from Te Awamutu in the mid 90's to the Te Rapa Air Force base, then to Tranzrail's Te Rapa loco sheds for a possible rebuild. In 2002, it was moved to Glenbrook. I cant find a pic of RM32, but sister RM31 is at Pahiatua
