OK I have a confession to make. I have been on the Ghan. We only travelled from Alice Springs through to Adelaide. Spent one night on board in the first class section and travelled our 4wd on the carriages as well. During the drive, we had online entertainment telling us local and historical stories as we drove through places. Because of our late booking , I guess, we managed to be put in the disabled unit for our carriage. (no jokes accepted ) But this meant we had heaps of room for doing stuff. If you have ever slept on a train, even first class is cramped. So all in all - we were treated like royalty. I spent a lot of time in the drinking carriage. The meal was supurb, wine great and company fantastic. I did not think I would sleep - but certainly did with the carriage lulling me and didn't want to wake up in the morning. Oh - free toilet bag... if you want a free Ghan toothbrush, get in line behind RoadHog... lol Enough of this boring chatter - just thought I could put in my small experience to make one of you at least very envious....

Years ago there were rail lines all over Southland. Many have been gone for decades. This is Wright's Bush on the Ohai Branch. This line is New Zealand's western-most and once ran to Orawia, as well. The Lines to Orawia and Ohai branche off at Thornbury Junction. The first "big" town on the Orawia line was Riverton. The station yard is now a storeage point for trucking companies Orepuke was further west. Here the old water tower stands as a reminder of the former line Tuatapere was the NZR's most westerly manned station for many years. The trains and tracks are gone, but the station remains.

Waitakere Tunnel has remained pretty much unchanged since it was opened in 1880. It sees about 30 trains each way per day! Replacing the Onehunga line. Bulit in 1873, this line was the first NZR line built. Passenger trains stopped running to Onehunga in 1973 and freight trains stopped running to Onehunga Wharf in 1994 and Te Papapa yard in 2006. The line is being rebuilt for passenger service, and stations will be at Penrose Jn (currently open), Mount Smart (where the pylon is in the photo), Te Papapa (at the old station platform between Mays Rd and Captain Springs Rd, and at Onehunga (Princes St). The line will eventually be electrified. The origional 1873 station is now the headquarters for the Railway Enthusiasts Society, in Alfred Street, Onehunga.
