Ancestor to the Flying Scotsman. The world's first class of Pacific locomotive was the NZR Q class engines that started work in 1901. Built in Pennsylvania to an NZR design, the first trains they were rostered to were the Rotorua Express (December 1901) and the South Island Limited (January 1902) They were withdrawn from traffic between 1948 and 1955. None were preserved.

One of a kind... In 1966, NZR bought 16 General Motors G8 locomotives for branch line service. The bulk of the fleet were re-assigned to the East Coast Main Trunk and the North Auckland Line. Known to the Paeroa crews as the "Gutless Wonders", and to local residents for their excessive noise in places like the Karangahake and Athenree Gorges, the NZR Db class were an unloved breed. 10 were rebuilt as Dbr class locos, the other 6 were sent to Palmerston North and New Plymouth to work lighter main line services and branch line shunts. They were scrapped by 1989. Victoria Railways bought 80 in 1964-65. These were scrapped in the 1980's, too. Canadian National bought a fleet of 20 for use in Newfoundland. This is the sole survivor.

Rebuilt from Db1006, Dbr1199 has since operated in both islands on nearly all services. Seen here at Westfield Loco, Auckland in her current guise as a Maxx subbie loco.
