Left to right: Former NZR Tr class shunter No.107, Climax geared locomotive No.1203 and former NZR L class engine No. 508 at rest in the Shantytown loco shed. Tr107 was built at Thames by A&G Price in 1957 and was used in north island service until 1966, when it was transfered to Linwood depot, Christchurch and later to various south island stations until retired at Greymouth in 2005. Climax 1203 was built in America in 1913 for the Matapuna Timber Co, near Taumarunui. She was used on tramways at Matapuna, Manunui, Mangapehi and Ongarue in the North Island and was retired in 1963. Bought by Shantytown and transfered south in 1970. L508 was built in England in 1877 for hauling trains between Wellington and Summit, at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Sold to the Public Works Dept in 1901, she was used in the construction of the North Island Main Trunk, East Coast Main Trunk and North Auckland Line. She was sold to the Wilsons Portland Cement Co, near Whangarei in 1931 and was in regular use there until she was sold to Tauranga Historic Village in 1974. With the closure in 1998 of the historic village, L 508 was sold to Shantytown at auction.

A scene from the late 1960's.... or is it? Middlemarch station, on the Otago Central Line, in October, 2009. Vulcan railcar Rm 56 at the platform, "Southerner Blue" Dj class locomotive and red Dg772 with vintage 4-wheel stock posed in the siding by the goods shed. The event was part of the Otago Central Line's 130th anniversary.

A much travelled locomotive. Ab663 was built at Addington worksops in 1917 and placed in service at Wellington in 1918. A year later, it was the first of it's class into Auckland, where it was rostered until 1932. In 1921, it was used on the royal train of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, between Auckland and Rotorua. A year later, it was used on the first freight train to Whangarei from Auckland. Eventually, it was used as far as Okaihau, Donnelly's Crossing, Thames, Taneatua and of course, Rotorua. In 1932, it was transfered to Cross's Creek for running trains thru the Wairarapa to Palmerston North and Napier. In 1945, It was the first of its class based at Gisborne. In 1948, Ab663 was transfered to Picton to work between there and Christchurch. A year later, it went to Dunedin''s Hillside workshops, where it was given a major overhaul. It spent the rest of its NZR life (except 1967) in Otagoo and Southland. In 1967, it spent most of the year working between Greymouth, Ross, Westport and Otira. Written off in 1969, it was held at Dunedin for possible use as spares for the Kingston Flyer. In 1974, it was sold to Ian Welch, who moved it too Linwood (NZR's Christchurch loco depot) and was moved again in 1990 to the Mainline Steam Trust's Parnell depot (Auckland) and two years later to their Plimmerton depot, where restoration started. Ab663 is named "Sharon Lee" after Welch's daughter.

Ab699 at the Pleasant Point Railway, one of only 2 ex-NZR locomotives built by A&G Price, in Thames, that are currently in steam. The other is A 428, seen here at Frog Rock in the Weka Pass

What happens when a job gets cancelled part-way through. Ormondville Viaduct on the Hawkes Bay line was meant origionally a curved timber bridge. A deviation was being built during the great depression, to straighten the line up. It was stopped part way through construction of a new steel truss viaduct, causing the builders to make a hurried wooden curve over to the old line. J1211 on the viaduct with an excursion.

Wa165 in Gisborne. Built in 1892 and used by the NZR till 1959, 165 spent 30 years as a playground attraction, untiil it was restored to full working order. It now works the only scheduled passenger rail service on the line between Palmerston North and Gisborne.
