The New Zealand Warriors opened their 2009 NRL season in style on Saturday night with a convincing 26-18 victory over Parramatta in Auckland.
Dedicating the match to former teammate Sonny Fai, who drowned at an Auckland Beach in January, the Warriors ran in four tries to three to notch a club-record seventh straight home triumph.
The victory was also a fitting result for veteran captain Steve Price, who was playing his 300th premiership match.
The Warriors dominated from the outset in front of a 17,447-strong crowd at Mt Smart Stadium, with debutant five-eighth Joel Moon, a former Brisbane player, scoring the opening try in the ninth minute.
Shortly after, Russell Packer planted a second try under the posts.
Parramatta winger Eric Grothe - making his 100th appearance for the Eels - found a gap in the Warriors defence to finally get his side on the board in the 24th minute.
But the Kiwis quickly responded with Lance Hohaia touching down after a nice pass from World Cup star Nathan Fien.
Both teams won all three of their trial matches but the Warriors were heavily favoured to beat Parramatta and looked good things when Hohaia crossed again just three minutes into the second half.
The Eels staged a comeback, with five-eighth Jarryd Hayne benefiting from a fumble by Wade McKinnon and touching down in the 51st minute before Krisnan Inu narrowed the Warriors' lead to eight points soon after.
But the Warriors held on, despite losing lock Micheal Luck to a high tackle from Fuifui Moimoi four minutes from fulltime.

Tonight: Souths vs Parramatta (I'm picking Souths here) Brisbane vs Melbourne (The storm by a whisker)
Tomorrow: St George vs Gold Coast (Wayne Bennet's Dragons should have the wood over the Titans) Penrith vs Canterbury (Doggys killed the eagles last week. look for an away win) North Queensland vs Wests (Should be a good even game. Cowboys should win at home)
Sunday: Canberra vs Roosters (I'm picking the "Green Machine" over the chooks by a fair margin) Manly vs Warriors (After last week, Warriors to thump the eagles at Brookvale)
Monday: Cronulla vs Newcastle (Sharks are hard to kill at home)

Stacey Jones showed he still has the magic as he sparked a late rally that saw the Warriors stun Manly and signal themselves as serious NRL contenders on Sunday.
Jones provided some inspirational touches on his return to the Warriors after a three and a half year absence that helped the Warriors come back to win 26-24 at a packed Brookvale.
Ivan Cleary's side have started the season with back to back wins adding the scalp of the Sea Eagles to last week's encouraging win at home over Parramatta.
Manly, the defending champions, have now had two losses to add to their off-field issues.
Jones, the 32-year-old veteran came off the bench in the 32nd minute and was still there at the final whistle to saviour a remarkable win.
Some sheer individual brilliance from Jones set up Brent Tate's second try to get the Warriors back to within four points with 12 minutes left.
A Jerome Ropati try off a bomb with a minute left levelled the scores and Denan Kemps sideline conversion got the Warriors a treasured win.
It was a victory that will go a long way to ridding them of a few demons from last year when they lost three championship matches and a preseason clash to Manly. That horror run included a record 52-6 loss at Brookvale.
But the Manly faithful who packed the ground in very hot conditions on Sunday saw the potential of this year's Warriors side as they ran in five tries in a see-sawing battle that also saw the hosts cross five times.
The Warriors effort was littered with some handling errors and alarming spells when they allowed Manly too much territory.
But once they managed to hold on to the ball the Warriors showed their enormous attacking talents.

The Warriors finally made a comeback count, scoring all the second half points and then clinching victory in extra time with a Stacey Jones field goal to down the Sydney Roosters in Auckland on Sunday.
The 17-16 win halted a three-match losing streak and got the Warriors right back in the mix of the top eight in a tightly contest NRL championship.
Down 0-16 at halftime after an ordinary first half, the Warriors forwards finally got a bit of roll into their game and Jones produced his customary magic, scoring one try and setting up two others with pin-point bombs and then kicking the golden goal in extra time..
The Warriors got a late boost when Lance Hohaia was declared fit. Coach Ivan Cleary had no hesitation in slotting him in at fullback for the absent Wade McKinnon, adding to the returning presence of skipper Steve Price and try-machine Manu Vatuvei.
Aside from the permanent absence of centre Brent Tate and McKinnon, this was close to the club's best lineup.
Not that they played that way for long periods in front of 16,300 fans at Mt Smart Stadium.
The first half was appalling at times and only the urgency of the situation seemed to finally spark the Warriors into action as the game wore on.
Hohaia provided the inspiration in extra time with a piece of magic that turned a defensive situation into an attacking option with an 80m kick and chase that set set up the opportunity for Jones' magic.
Credit to Warriors for their courage for this was a result built on passion more than precision.
This loomed as a must-win match and somehow they delivered. Sometimes winning ugly is even better than with a bit of style.
And with the hole the Warriors were in before this amtch and then again at halftime, the Warriors were always going to tke a win any which way it came.
It doesn't get any easier - they are away to the Storm in Melbourne next weekend and then play St George away the following week before they sit out the bye.
For a team with a history of travel struggles, this win over the Roosters at home was vital after they had lost their two previous outings at Mt Smart.
In a week in the game where some leading figures were lamenting the supposed lessening impact of the big men under the new refereeing system, the Roosters' heavy artillery certainly made their presence felt.
Shane Shackleton, Craig Fitzgibbon, Frank-Paul Nuuausala and Willie Mason were full of energy and damage, shading their Warriors counterparts.
With this sort of momentum the visitors always looked more likely on attack, especially with the classy Braith Anasta organising the little men.
But then the Warriors' big men stepped up and left it to their little general to do the rest.
Hohaia showed his danger just six minutes into the match when he danced over from close range but inexplicably failed to touch down cleanly and the try was disallowed.
In fact all the returning stars had a few early problems with Vatuvei and even Price guilty of handling errors as well as they looked to settle back into the groove.
The Roosters made them pay for their mistakes in the 22nd minute when they ran the Warriors into touch and then mounted a solid attack with Sia Soliola scooting through off a Ben Jones pass.
The Roosters worked a sweet move in their set from the resulting kickoff to free Shane Shackleton for the try.
When Mitchell Pearce waltzed through some woefully weak defence just before halftime the Warriors were in real trouble at 0-16.
The Warriors simply had to strike first after the break and they eventually managed that when Stacey Jones backed up for a return pass to squeeze through a gap for a crucial try. Denan Kemp's conversion closed the gap to 10 points with 26 minutes left.
The Warriors went to the air for their next try with Vatuvei getting up to tap back a Jones' bomb for Jerome Ropati to collect and score. Kemp couldn't add the extras from wide out but suddenly had more spring in their step.
Vatuvei challenged for another Jones bomb with 10 minutes left and it fell kindly for him to pounce on in the ingoal. Again Kemp couldn't convert, leaving the Warriors two points short.
Kemp got a chance to make amends with five minutes left when the warriors won a penalty 30m out and he goaled to tie the match up.
Hohaia missed a field goal soon after as desperation crept in. Then in extra time he helped get the Warriors into position for a golden opportunity and Jones made no mistake with his.
The Warriors have now played the Roosters 24 times for 13 wins, 10 losses and a draw.
Warriors 17: Stacey Jones, Jerome Ropati, Manu Vatuvei tries; Denan Kemp 2 goals; Jones field goal.
Sydney Roosters 16: Sia Soliola, Shane Shackleton, Mitchell Pearce tries; Craig Fitzgibbon 2 goals.

An agonising field goal miss by Stacey Jones and a video referee's call has left the New Zealand Warriors with a gritty 14-14 National Rugby League (NRL) draw with the Melbourne Storm in Melbourne.
A week after kicking the matchwinning field goal against the Roosters, Jones had the chance to repeat tonight, two minutes into golden point extra time, but his attempt from 15m out hit the left upright and flew into Storm hands.
Then, with 21 seconds left in the 10-minute extra time period, fullback Lance Hohaia slotted a field goal but video referee Tim Mander ruled Jones had knocked on after on-field ref Tony Archer was unsighted.
It left the Warriors to rue a win that got away, but still a gutsy second half comeback from 6-14 down as they finished strongly to claim a valuable competition point. A brave defensive effort was epitomised by forward Micheal Luck's remarkable 72 tackles.
Jones and Storm halfback Cooper Cronk each had three field goal attempts to try and break the deadlock, with Jones' poster from clearly the handiest position.
It was another epic between the two sides, three tries apiece with Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei bagging a double. The Warriors had won the previous two clashes by a combined five points.
The Warriors arrived in Melbourne confident of an upset after the comeback win against the Roosters and a good recent record at Olympic Park including a dramatic 18-15 in week one of last year's playoffs.
Coach Ivan Cleary promoted prop Jesse Royal to the starting 13 for the first time but decided not to risk fullback Wade McKinnon (hamstring), with Hohaia a solid replacement.
The match kicked off in steady rain after both sides marked Anzac Day with the raising of the New Zealand and Australian flags, before the national anthems and Last Post were played.
The Warriors led 2-0 inside the first five minutes as they earned back-to-back sets in Storm territory before captain Steve Price opted for Denan Kemp to goal a handy penalty.
From there the hosts, led by a bustling start by Kiwis prop Adam Blair, dominated much of the first half and the Warriors would have been happy at just 6-10 down at the break.
The Storm scored twice in the first quarter as Cronk became heavily involved.
His chip kick caught Vatuvei flat-footed and gave his opposite Steve Turner an easy try, then their new recruit from Parramatta Brett Finch - who debuted after not being originally named - laid on a ball for flying fullback Billy Slater to slide over.
Several Warriors handling errors with the slippery ball threatened to hand the Storm control but the visitors recovered and got back within four points when Vatuvei charged over out wide from a Jerome Ropati short ball.
Two desperate trysaving tackles from Jones (on winger Anthony Quinn) and Jacob Lillyman (on prop Brett White) kept the Warriors in touch at the break.
Jones' tackle left him pinned under a heavily concussed Quinn who took an accidental knee to the head. Play was held up for nearly 10 minutes as medical staff from both teams treated Quinn before he was stretchered off into an ambulance.
The Storm struck the crucial blow two minutes after halftime when Lance Hohaia was tackled heavily in taking a bomb, and centre Will Chambers scored from an overlap.
The Warriors scrambled well on defence to frustrate the Storm, then Vatuvei injected himself with telling effect.
He looked try-bound before being cut down by a Slater tackle, then two minutes later he bulldozed over in a simple one-on-one with the much smaller Turner to narrow the gap to 10-14.
The visitors sensed an upset and lifted their game as Slater was twice trapped in his own in-goal area.
Then Nathan Fien and Price combined for a clever run-around to set Patrick Ah Van away on the overlap. Kemp's attempt at goal was wide, leaving the scores level with 15 minutes left.
