When I started my training, there were WW1 vets around, very interesting to listen to them & their stories
Even recently one old 94 yr old was telling me how they know where the guns were by the sound & sight of the blast, bit like thunder & lightning. Then it was noted down on a graph & where they crossed they knew thats where the enemy was & would send in the bombers so they then had a safe path

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons...
Sometimes I think we should let the memories of war go, mourn for our fallen hero yes, but let those who have gone, rest in peace. The war has been over for 50 plus years now.............
Ducks as the bulldust hits the fan...........

No need to duck Granny you have a point....but I think we need to remember ....and maybe the young ones can learn from the past to make sound decisions for the future...It should really be a day to remember, a silent thanks to those who lost so much. Not only those who lost their lives but those who lost members of their families....it was for our freedom...and I don't think we should ever forget that.... thats my call on it...

I will be putting on the Red suit and heading over to Shannon for the civic ceremony and spending a brief time in the RSA later ( I am a member of Shannon RSA ).
Remember that a lot of civilians - including Red Cross, YMCA and Church Army [ angry can version of Salvation Army ] and others "helper services" and particulally seamen and fire fighters -were killed in both wars, many of who were volunteers just trying to make life a bit more bearable.
It is right to remember all those who died AND WE MUST REMEMBER THE WASTE OF WAR SO AS TO NEVER REPEAT IT.

Everyone remembers them, they are too heroic to forget, BUT...why have Anzac day shoved down our throats for 3 weeks before and at least 1 week afterwards, isn't this going to put some youngsters off our day of remembrance? There is such a hooha about Anzac day now, that more people than care to admit it, just stay at home for"just another" public holiday. Never forget war? Tell that to George Bush.......

;D since the last world war we have had the Korean, Vietnam, Timor,Afganistan and the lrak war,to name but a few and we have had men die in those wars too. ld like to think they are remembered as well. My husband will be playing his bagpipes in front of the parade to the cenetaph at Matakohe. He has done this at various locations over the years. lts a special day for the older generation, who are so pleased to have their grandchildren show an interest in their past exploits
