Special service planned for Sir Ed at Windsor Castle Buckingham Palace says a memorial service for Sir Edmund Hillary at Windsor Castle in April will include the "laying up" of his banner in St George's Chapel.
The Queen will be represented at Tuesday's funeral in Auckland by Governor-General Anand Satyanand, and the absence of any members of the royal family has drawn criticism from the Republican Movement.
The Queen's press secretary in a statement said Mr Satyanand would represent the Queen in both a personal and official capacity at the funeral.
A personal wreath from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh would also be laid as Sir Edmund lay in state prior to Tuesday's service at St Mary's Cathedral in Parnell.
The Queen had offered the Hillary family a memorial service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, in April, the exact date of which was yet to be confirmed.
ADVERTISEMENT "As Sir Edmund was a Knight of the Garter, the memorial service will include the 'laying up' of Sir Edmund's banner in St George's Chapel," the statement said.
"The family will also be invited to attend an audience with the Queen following the service."
Prime Minister Helen Clark said that in her early 80s the Queen was not in a position to travel such a great distance at short notice to attend Tuesday's funeral.
Instead the Queen was doing something very rare and special by holding a memorial service at Windsor Castle, Miss Clark said.
Sir Edmund was one of only 24 Knights of the Garter appointed by the Queen and his success as the first man to step on the summit of Mt Everest was proclaimed on the morning of her coronation in 1953.
Miss Clark said normal protocol on the death of a Knight of the Garter was to include a ceremony in the regular Evensong service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
She said the fact that Sir Ed had been offered an "elevated" separate ceremony was a "separate and rare event".
Retired Auckland University history professor Michael Graves told NZPA the royal family only attend the funerals of heads of state and of other royals.
He said the idea the Queen not attending was a "snub" had been "built up from this end (New Zealand)".
"The situation has been misread. Given all the duties she has to do it's not like she's just sitting back there drinking tea until someone dies somewhere in the world."
