I was given an old fossilized computer to sort out for a friend, just updating and setting up new internet connects etc. It runs on windows 98 ( I thought that went out with the ark! lol) anyway, I am trying to uninstall AVG free and change it to Avast. However no matter what I do, AVG keeps telling me an error occured and wont remove it. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it.

hey win98 is better than vista
I woulda kept avg on it personaly.
instead of running the uninstall have you tried going into control panel, add/remove programs?
If that doesn't work just delete the folder and shortcuts.

I nearly choked when I saw it. This thing doesnt even have any USB ports, thats how old it is lol. I've been trying to talk them into joining us in the 21st century but I don't think its gonna happen lol.
I've tried the add/remove and it comes up with the same problem as before when I use the AVG to uninstall. I'll try deleting the files as you suggested. Keep your fingers crossed for me

AVG 8 will not support Win98 (which by the way is sufficiently light to make a recent-ish PC screamingly fast).
Use Avast or maybe ClamWin.

look up the Control Panel > Installed Programs list, then try deleting it from there.
If you can't, then most of the files have already been deleted, or there is a corruption of the program somewhere.
Try deleting the whole file ( C:/Windows/Avast ) I think by memory.

Don't worry about uninstalling it.
Just don't use it.
Install avast normally, and run that.

The only problem with that, is then you will have redundant registry files that will slow the PC down.
You can either do a search within the registry & delete them, or find a registry cleaner program to do a full scan of redundant or corrupted registry data. - Which wouldn't be a bad idea anyway.
Best thing to do though, would be to re-format the whole drive & reinstall Win 98, or UBUNTU.

Windows 98 is unsupported. That means you will have no updates. Also, fewer and fewer programs are still supporting Windows 98.
The best thing to do is remove Windows and install a Linux distributions (Ubuntu and its derivatives will do).

Hi You need to download the version that is on your computer.
They are out there somewhere.
And then use it to properly uninstall Avg.
I have just had to do this with version 7

AVG is no longer offering free updates from today so I am currently switching back to AVAST. Hope it lives up to it's name.
