I have had 5 candidates which I love all equally for different reasons. Will be eager to hear yours. But me first.
Kana: Little Sister,
I played Kana about a year ago, as I was starting to get into a different type of game, visual novel. Visual novels are essentially game where you have a image of the characters involved on the screen with a background, music and voice acting, you make a decision every so often, very little involved gameplay wise. I started of with games that deserve an honorable mention like Narcissu, Ever 17, Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet. Those three were amazing games, but Kana took it to another level. Most of these games rely or powerful emotive story telling and using well established characters to get there message across, all left me rather emotional, borderline crying. But Kana was simply amazing, it's the story of a young girl who has renal insufficiency, you see the events unfold through the eyes of her brother. Story wise, this game is unrivaled by anything I have ever seen in movie, novel or TV let alone video games. This game will forever hold a very special place in my heart. And yes, I cried solidly for the last hour of playing and then cried myself to sleep.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Sheer F***ing Epicness. This game is the cream of the crop of modern day, HD, 7.1 surround sound games. The entire gameplay interface has been changed and perfected of the last 3 games, the weapons greatly expanded and perfected, the story well concluded and well executed.
Ever 17: out of infinity
As mentioned earlier, a visual novel. Though it does not go down the route of Kana, it goes the way of a complex but well put together mystery. Six people are locked in an underwater facility of a theme park with less than a few days to live before the flooding reaches the compartment they are in. Depending on which characters you choose to buddy up with, you learn different parts about there lives, and what they have to do with the facility. My brief synopsis can not do the game justice.
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Second installment of the Star Ocean franchise released in the late 90's. Well executed story, excellent level system, well developed skills tree. Alternate characters could be obtained as well as secret characters. One of the last great RPG's.
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction
I put a lot of hours into this when I was younger, say 200 odd hours at least. Story was solid yeah, but the skill tree and online play was excellent. Essentially WoW, but darker and more developed IMO. Remains one of my fondest childhood memories.
Right, what do you guys think...
