Picton station, at the top of the South Island. Terminus for the Tranz Coastal Express and the InterIslander Blenheim station. Both Picton and Blenheim were built in the late 1890's to the designs of George Troup. These were Class 2 stations, which were designed for major provincial towns.

Further south is Seddon, a standard class 3 station, built without a track-side verandah. The roadside addition is very recent.

Oaro, on the Kaikoura Coast never had a standard type of station. This brick building was built in the late 1930's to act as a temporary station. Unlike the 19th century stations at Picton, Blenheim and further south, the railway didnt reach the Kaikoura Coast till late. The line wasnt even opened until after the Nazis lost!!!!!

For many years, this station, a class 4 design, resided at Ferniehurst, North Canterbury. The station is now sited at The Weka Pass Railway, Waipara.

Also at Waipara is the former Mina station, from near Cheviot, North Canterbury. It now bears the name "Glenmark".

Papanui, in suburban Christchurch, has seen many changes Above is a 1960's view, below is a recent view. The verandah has been closed in, and the station is now a PUB!!!!

For many years, all major south island services stopped here. The Moorhouse Street station in Christchurch. An impressive art deco structure that opened in 1960, to replace an even more impressive, yet smaller, gothic-style station.

Christchurch is at one end of one of the country's first railway lines. At the other end of that line is Lyttleton.

A number of branch lines ran out of Christchurch. The Southbridge Branch was closed in the 1960's. At Leeston, the only remaining link is the old goods shed.

Motukaraka, on the Little River Branch was never anything more than a class 5 lean-to on a platform, yet it outlived the line it served!

The terminus of the Little River Branch was Little River station. Still there, along with the old goods shed and an iconic guards van, preserved forever!

20km west of Christchurch, on the South Island Main Trunk, is Rolleston Junction, where the SIMT and the Midland Lines meet.

Typical of major main line stations is Ashburton. Here, whilst the express was in, the traditional "Railway Scrum" was performed, as hundreds of fleet-footed passengers tried to race to the refreshment rooms, buy their pie, block cake and tea, then return to their seats aboard the train... all within a timeframe of between 7 and 15 minutes, depending on locomotive requirements! Ashburton was also the starting point for trains to Mount Somers, and was, for many years, the base for Methven Branchline operations!

A once important stop was Orari. Here, passengers to and from the Geraldine area would board their trains! Once the Railways Road Services took over, Orari's flame didnt so much flicker, as go out completely!! The station was a mid-1960's replacement for the origional 1875 wooden building. It has a similar floor plan to Oaro, and similar architecture to Rolleston.

Timaru station is the 1960's equivalent to the old-style wooden station, like at Ashburton. It was also the base of operations for a busy port, as well as trains to Fairlie, Waimate and Waihao Downs.
