The one-time headquarters of the Duntroon and Hakataramea Railway Company is this building. Built by the company in the 1880's, and sold a few short years later to the NZGR! Hakataramea station served a small town on the long defunct Kurow Branch, which left the SIMT at Pukeuri Junction, near Oamaru

Oamaru station looks just as good as it did 100 years ago!!! Designed by George Troup, it pre-dates the magnificent Dunedin station by a decade! Oamaru was the base of operations for the port, and branch lines to Kurow, Tokarahi and Ngatapa.

Further south, at Palmerston, a line went inland to Dunback. There was a junction at Inch Valley, where another branch ran from. This branch terminated at Makareao. It saw only 10 passenger trains in its last 50 years. Its sole purpose was to supply stone to the Burnside cement works in Dunedin. Here the last passenger service, a Taieri Gorge Ltd excursion is seen at Makareao.
